Remember as a kid, how we loved playing with our friends? My fondest childhood memories include countless hours playing tetherball, baseball, hanging out on the neighbors’ monkey bars and swimming in the neighborhood pool. As adults, we still enjoy being active with friends, but don’t always feel like we have the time or opportunities to do so. Group exercise provides us with an opportunity to feel young again and be physically active with others.
Group exercise offers a variety of benefits you might miss out on if you choose to work out on your own. Some of the benefits include exposure to a social and fun environment, a safe and effectively designed workout, a consistent exercise schedule, an accountability factor for participating in exercise, and a workout that requires no prior exercise knowledge or experience.
Of course, it’s fun. There’s usually lively music and an inspiring instructor to motivate participants. But what our instructors are trained to do is to plan a well-balanced, goal oriented, safe, and effective program. Let your instructor know if you are new to class and certainly tell your instructor if you have an injury or health condition. He or she will alert you if an activity or move is unsafe for you. Instructors can suggest alternatives or modifications.
An appropriately designed class includes warm-up, cool-down and flexibility in addition to the conditioning section. When we exercise on our own, we often skip portions of a workout we know less about or are not our favorite to perform.
Working out with consistency is important for achieving fitness results. Once you choose the classes you’ll be attending weekly, you can work those times into your schedule and help to develop a regular, consistent program that becomes a healthy habit.
The friends you make in the classes you choose will help to keep your intention intact offering encouragement and accountability. If you like to be around others, you will probably enjoy the social aspect of group exercise classes. These fun sessions provide you with the opportunity to meet new people, cultivate new friendships, and share experiences. Studies have found that support from people sharing the same experience and struggles with the difficult task of losing weight (if that’s your goal) can enhance weight loss outcomes.
Here at our “Y” we presently offer a variety of 48 free classes, 5 Zumba and 2 Aqua Zumba classes, and 11 Water Exercise classes.
Many people assume that you have to be in great shape to try a class, but group sessions are available for all fitness levels whether you choose a relaxing yoga session or a challenging spin class. Regardless of your passion or interest, what is most important is to move. Group exercise offers an outlet for people to do this while having fun!
